Release notes
What's new
Every public beta, newest first. The same notes are in the app under What's new.
0.92-beta
Thread colours, sorted search and feeds that keep your place
- This update signs you out once: sign in and set up your Client ID or RedReader again, then add your widgets and pinned shortcuts back.
- Settings › Comments › Thread colours: branch lines by depth or in one colour, each top-level comment in its own card. Off by default, works with Guide lines.
- Sort search results and the posts on a profile, with a time range for Top.
- Optional: Settings › Feeds & content › Resume where you left off opens Home and communities at your place after the app has been closed.
- Find in thread has an OP chip that steps through the post author's comments.
- Search no longer asks Google Trends: the empty search page shows only your history and Reddit's suggestions.
- Fixed: video sound going on after Back from search or a profile, the keyboard coming back in search, links to a comment not landing on it.
- Help & about now has the licence, the source code, every library's licence and what Reddit's January 2027 API change means.
0.91-beta
Export your Reddit data, and update from inside the app
- Settings › Updates shows your version and the newest one and checks on request. From the next release on, Update downloads it, checks it and hands it to Android to install.
- When a new version is out, a notice says so. Close it and it stays away for a day.
- Settings › Accounts › Export your Reddit data saves your saved posts, votes, posts, comments, communities and messages as a ZIP in Downloads.
- Optional: tap a post's title to hide its text, like a comment. Turn it on in Settings › Comments & notifications.
- More replies, community icons and find in thread work more reliably in big threads and ask Reddit less often.
0.90-beta
Home-screen widgets, and plain answers when Reddit blocks
- Two home-screen widgets. Inbox shows how many items are unread and the newest ones. Posts shows Home or a community you've joined. Add them from your launcher's widget list.
- When Reddit blocks a request from third-party apps, subshell now says so instead of showing a generic error. The mod queue no longer blames your moderator role for it.
- Settings › Diagnostics › Check Reddit access shows which kinds of reads Reddit answers right now and adds the result to the diagnostic report.
- Open prefilled GitHub issue copies the report so you can paste it.
- Hide read posts is remembered for each account, and a greyed-out item says why. Reset read markers no longer looks like a refresh button.
- A short list no longer hides the top bar and bottom navigation when you drag it, and an empty Unread inbox no longer keeps loading older pages.
0.89-beta
Replies, inbox and links load again
- "More replies" load again in threads. Reddit started refusing the request subshell used, so replies now load through the thread itself.
- Comments opened from the Inbox, from your profile and from links open again. Reddit also refused the post and comment lookups behind them.
- Community icons, crossposts and edit or delete of your own posts and comments read through requests Reddit still answers.
- Find in a thread now loads the rest of the thread before it searches. The diagnostic report shows how thread reads and Reddit's request limit went.
- In Settings › Accounts, account rows no longer show an arrow that led nowhere. The current account has a check mark.
0.88-beta
Notifications behind a VPN and for new comments
- Notifications for messages and new posts now also arrive while a VPN is on for every app. Before, the background check waited for a network without a VPN.
- Watched communities can also notify you about new comments: Settings › Notifications › New posts › Also new comments. Your own posts and comments never notify you.
- If Reddit stops accepting the app's Client ID, subshell shows one notice that says what happened, what still works and where to set another one.
- Long messages in the notice tray open in full with More, and the diagnostic report says when and how Reddit refused a request.
0.87-beta
One size for the whole app, save for offline, and a calmer first start
- Settings › Appearance › Size › UI size makes the whole app smaller or larger, from 85 to 110 %: bars, buttons, lists, dialogs and text.
- Save for offline in the Home menu keeps the top 50 posts, their comments and pictures on your phone for when you have no signal.
- A new setting, Show NSFW media, shows NSFW pictures and videos without a tap on each one. Spoilers stay covered.
- New installs set up hand, look, content and notifications in one short flow, and Backup & restore now says what a backup holds.
- Fixes: a crash when a link or notification opened the app, "r/name" searches in Discover, a play button flash before autoplay, comment jumps that stopped short, and more.
0.86-beta
Reply from notifications, RedGIFs with sound and a faster inbox
- Private messages and chats arrive as conversation notifications, and you can reply right from the notification.
- RedGIFs clips play with sound, videos pause the moment you switch tabs, and headset or Bluetooth buttons play and pause them.
- The inbox refreshes several times faster, and messages you read elsewhere no longer count as unread.
- You can post to your own profile, and galleries posted from the app show their images again.
- Subshell opens straight to your feeds, and switching dark mode or text size keeps your place, drafts and votes.
0.85-beta
A security update for sign-in, notifications and media
- Signing out of an account now also removes Reddit's web login, unless another signed-in account still uses it.
- The sign-in window opens only Reddit, Google and Apple pages, and a sign-in that fails is also withdrawn at Reddit.
- Other apps can no longer open accounts or screens in subshell. Notifications from before the update just open the app.
- With the app lock on, the recent-apps preview stays blank on Android 12 and older, and new-post notifications from hidden communities don't name them.
- Post images and videos load only from public addresses, images and GIFs share one memory limit, and nothing is written to the system log.
0.84-beta
New-post notifications, text selection and one sign-in for everything
- Get a notification when a community you choose has a new post: "Notify about new posts" in the community's ⋮ menu (up to 10 communities).
- Long press to select and copy text in posts, comments and messages, with Android's Copy, Share and Translate.
- Sign-in asks for every permission once. Modmail, mod log and the wiki no longer ask again (accounts signed in before approve one more time).
- If sign-in stops working because Reddit or RedReader changed something, you can edit the redirect URI and user agent yourself, in Settings or during setup.
- Short confirmations such as "Muted r/x" now disappear by themselves.
0.83-beta
Choose how posts look, pinned posts first, and pinch to zoom videos
- Choose how posts look: Large, Compact, List or Grid, from the view button beside the feed (and in Settings).
- A community's pinned posts now come first in every sort, as cards or as compact highlights.
- Pinch to zoom videos in the full-screen player (turn it on in Settings).
- A fresh look: Google's Material Symbols icons, Material 3 Expressive motion, and dynamic colour on by default.
- More reliable: one unreadable post no longer breaks a whole feed, removed images say so instead of retrying, and the inbox sync retries on a shaky network.
0.82-beta
A new comment composer, a smaller app and open source
- Replying is rebuilt: a quick reply card sits on the keyboard, and Expand opens a full-screen editor with formatting and a preview of your comment.
- subshell is about two-thirds smaller (7.5 MB instead of 24.6 MB) and starts more evenly, thanks to code shrinking and a startup profile.
- If subshell closes unexpectedly, the next start offers to send a diagnostic report. Nothing leaves your phone unless you choose to send it.
- subshell's source code is now public under GPL-3.0, one snapshot per release, at github.com/brealorg/subshell-source-public.
- Updated to the newest Material 3 components.
0.81-beta
Feed videos keep their shape
- Fixed: tall and very wide videos in the feed were stretched and cut off at the edge while playing.
- Mention people in comments: type @ or u/ for people from the thread, then Reddit's people search.
- Subshell checks for updates when you come back to it, so a new release shows up within the hour.
- The update dialog can turn on update notifications if Android has them switched off.
0.80-beta
Material 3 throughout, a new video player and better accessibility
- Material 3 throughout: one top bar per screen, a navigation rail on tablets and foldables, list rows and segmented choices in Settings.
- Video: a new seek bar with live frames, playback options in post and full screen, speed, double-tap skip, hold for 2x and picture-in-picture (each optional).
- Wi-Fi only autoplay now really holds autoplay on mobile data; playing video keeps the screen on, and unplugging headphones pauses.
- A Video group in Settings: subtitles, audio language, timeline size, quality and where the playback options show.
- Better contrast, screen-reader labels and large-text layouts across the app.
- Defaults reviewed: the theme follows the system, unread markers are on, and a one-time tip points to Settings.
- Comments removed by a moderator are marked Removed in the thread.
- NSFW: searches follow Show NSFW posts, quarantined communities can be opted into, banned and private ones say why; optional random NSFW community.
- Errors appear in one tray instead of pop-ups; an image that can never load offers Open in browser.
- Images linked over http load over https; a link to an image host stays a link.
- Fixes: GIFs on your own profile autoplay again, lists without a top bar scroll by touch, Hidden tab for local accounts, link decoding on Android 8-12.
- Many internal checks replaced by behaviour tests, and every land now runs a lint gate.
0.79-beta
Saved searches, RedGIFs in the app, Reddit favorites sync and a full review of the code.
- New: saved searches in the Search hub, an optional scroll position indicator, RedGIFs clips in the app (with Show NSFW posts) and favorites synced with Reddit.
- Reddit emotes, GIFs and images show inline in posts and comments and can be edited; spoilers stay hidden until tapped; escapes, nested styles and lists render right.
- Safer writing: a post, comment, message or moderator action whose answer was lost is checked with Reddit instead of sent twice, and drafts survive restarts.
- Accounts stay apart: votes, scroll positions, lists and notifications no longer cross between accounts; a notification for another account switches to it.
- Fewer crashes and stalls: the app returns where you were after Android closes it, large photos no longer crash previews, and slow work left the main thread.
- Accessibility: switches, choices and buttons announce what they are and their state, touch targets are larger, and auto-hiding controls follow the system timeout.
- Correctness: votes, refreshes, paging, search results, markdown, flair and moderator tools now do what they show, and Retry picks up where a load failed.
- No lost work: drafts, replies and moderator actions survive Android closing the app or a missing answer from Reddit, and backups read back everything they hold.
- Privacy and security: names and ids stay out of release logs, turning a protection off needs the device unlock, and comment images load only from known image hosts.
- Speed: lists, settings, backups and links read their data off the main thread, caches are capped, and long threads load more replies on their own.
- Also: inbox notifications are on by default, shares and links open in the Subshell you already have, numbers follow your language and word filters match whole words.
- Removed: video downloads. Videos stream; anything an older version downloaded can be deleted in Settings.
0.78.0-beta.1
App lock, private user notes, sharing into Subshell and content filters everywhere.
- Optional app lock: unlock with biometrics or the screen lock, choose when it locks again, and optionally hide what notifications say.
- Private notes and coloured tags on Reddit users, shown next to their name, with an opt-in to include them in backups.
- Share links, text and images from other apps into Subshell to start a post (optional, off by default).
- Content filters now work on community pages, custom feeds and search, can be limited to one community, and can show how many posts they hide.
- Many more Reddit links open inside the app: share links, images and videos, profile tabs, searches, custom feeds and wiki pages.
- Also new: find in thread, jump between top-level comments, in-app text size, pure black theme, launcher shortcuts, gallery downloads, Giphy GIFs and post flair emoji.
0.77.0-beta.7

- Editing a post or comment asks before discarding unsaved changes.
0.77.0-beta.6

- Internal restructuring of app state into focused components and removal of unused screens, with no intended visible changes.
- Same changes as beta.5, republished so the in-app update check can offer it.
